How Can I Increase My Water Intake?

I get this question all the time, so here’s an answer for you.

So one of the first things you will hear when you embark on a journey of health and fitness, is that you need to increase your water intake. This is very true. Essentially, our bodies are made up of over 60% water and as such, it plays a vital role in ensuring that our bodies are functioning properly.

Water is life and the benefits are endless. From cleansing out the system, to proper lubrication of joints and muscles and the more cosmetic reasons like clearer skin, water is the most essential part of our diets.

While most of us actually know all these facts and benefits, the real challenge becomes actually taking a  step to increase our fluid/water intake. In this age of sodas and wine, we can more easily reach for a glass of wine or a bottle of soda than we will reach for  glass of water, even though the latter is what our body desires and needs to function properly.

If you find yourself wanting to drink water, but not being able to force it down your throat for obvious reasons (aka water is tasteless), here are some tips to help you;

  1. Start Small; as with all things in life, we must start gradually. So don’t expect to down a big bottle of water at a go, but rather aim to start with one glass in the morning and one before each meal. on thing I have noticed with water drinking is that the more you drink, the more you want to drink it.
  2. Infuse Your Water; if you still feel like the taste of water is bland to you, then get a bottle of water and infuse it with your favorite fruits. You can put in slices of lemon, strawberry or pineapples and leave overnight in the fridge. You can also infuse with some blackcurrant if this will help you stomach the water.
  3. Eat Your Water; yh you read that right. You can eat your water if you’re not up to drinking too much. Most fruits have a high water content. A cucumber is about 90% water, while a pineapple, apple or watermelon is somewhere between 80% to 90% as well. So if you getb tired of drinking, don’t get tired of eating it, just keep that water level up.
  4. Just Drink It; honestly, the benefits of water drinking are almost immeasurable so don’t deny your body of what it truly needs. If you have to get a water bottle, if you have to set an alarm  to remind you, if you have to close your eyes and drink it, whatever it is, borrow some advice from Nike and just drink it.

Happy drinking!!!
