Do you want to Lose Weight? Do These 5 Things
If your goal is weight loss, I need you to spare a few minutes of your time because what I’m about to share might completely change the way you approach this journey.
The problem with focusing on the number on the scale is that it keeps you trapped in a cycle of frustration. You step on the scale, the number has not moved fast enough, you feel like a failure, and you quit. And then Monday comes and you start the whole thing over again.
I have watched this happen thousands of times over my decade of coaching women. And the women who break out of that cycle are never the ones who found a better diet or a harder workout plan. They are the ones who shifted their focus entirely away from the scale and into building the foundation that makes lasting results inevitable.
Here are the five things I want you to focus on instead.
1. Write down your WHY
Before you change a single thing about what you eat or how you move, I want you to pick up a piece of paper and write down why you actually want to lose weight.
Not in your head. On paper. Physical words on a physical page.
Your “why” might be that you want to get off your blood pressure medication. It might be that your knees ache every time you climb the stairs and you are done living that way. It might be that you want to have the energy to play with your children without getting winded. It might be that you want to feel confident in your clothes again. It might be all of those things.
Whatever it is, write it down. Because your why is your driving force. On the days when motivation disappears, when life gets overwhelming, when the biscuits are calling your name at 10pm, your why is what pulls you back.
A vague desire to “lose weight” will not carry you through the hard days. A deeply personal reason will.
2. Build habits that actually stick
Here is where most people go wrong. They try to change everything at once. New diet, new workout routine, new sleep schedule, new everything — all starting on the same Monday. And by Thursday, the whole thing has collapsed.
Sustainable habits have to be simple. Not simple as in easy, but as in doable. Realistic. Repeatable without requiring superhuman willpower every single day.
What does that look like practically?
Maybe you stop snacking on your children’s leftovers. Maybe you cut out the sugary drinks you have with every meal. Maybe you stop reaching for plantain chips every evening in front of the TV. Maybe you commit to drinking two more glasses of water every day.
These sound small. They are small. That is exactly the point.
Small habits done consistently over weeks and months create enormous results. Do not underestimate them because they do not feel dramatic enough. Dramatic is not what lasts. Simple and consistent is what lasts.
3. Build a routine that fits your real life
I cannot stress this enough. Your weight loss routine has to fit the life you are actually living, not the life you wish you had, not the life of someone without children or a job or a household to run.
One of my members, Chinelo, works a 9 to 5, has three children, and has lost over 20 kilos on my programme. When I asked her what made the difference this time after trying so many diets before, she said “April, your programme gave me structure on my day-to-day life”.
Not a dramatic overhaul. Structures that fit into her real, messy, busy, beautiful everyday life.
That is what works.
Think about what your routine can realistically include. It does not have to start with an hour-long workout. It might start with 5,000 steps a day. It might start with knowing what you are having for breakfast every morning this week instead of guessing at 7am when everyone is rushing out the door.
And critically, your routine should never isolate you from your family. If your weight loss plan means you cannot eat with your family, cannot join them at the dinner table, cannot participate in normal social meals without feeling like the odd one out, you will always fail. The plan needs to work with your life, not against it.
4. Get structure and accountability
This is the step most people skip. And it is the reason most people fail.
Let me say something that might be hard to hear. Your partner is not going to keep you accountable. They mean well. But keeping you on track on a Tuesday evening when you are tired and want to skip your workout is not their job, and they are usually not equipped to do it without it becoming a source of tension.
You need a coach. You need a programme with clear structure that tells you what to eat, how to move, and what to do when life gets complicated. You need someone in your corner whose specific role is to hold your hand on the days you want to give up.
Chinelo did not lose 21 kilos because she has more willpower than you. She does not have two heads. She succeeded because she was accountable. She had structure. She had a system that carried her even on the hard days.
That accountability is available to you too.

5. Join a community
I say this every single chance I get because I have seen it transform results time and time again.
Women who lose weight as part of a community lose faster and maintain their results longer than women who try to do it alone. Full stop.
When you are surrounded by women who are getting up to work out, meal prepping on Sundays, sharing their wins, supporting each other through the hard weeks, choosing themselves every single day, that energy is contagious. You see what is possible. You feel the accountability of a group that is showing up. And on the days you want to quit, you remember that nobody around you is quitting.
That community is powerful. It is one of the most underrated tools in your weight loss toolkit and one of the most important things I have built inside April Laugh Fitness.
One final thing — focus on YOUR journey
We do not all weigh the same. We do not all have the same BMI, the same health history, the same hormones, the same starting point.
Just because someone in your community lost 10kg in a month does not mean you will or should. Do not put that pressure on yourself. Do not compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter seven.
Focus on your own journey. Celebrate your own wins. You lost 1kg, zipped up those jeans, walked up the stairs without your knees aching, cooked a healthy meal for your family when you used to order takeaway; those are progress.
Progress over perfection. Every single day.
Enjoy the process of losing weight. Build it as a forever lifestyle rather than a temporary fix. And before you know it, the weight will follow.
